It seems like almost every elementary school is adding a literacy coach to the faculty these days - but who will coach the coaches? Literacy Coach Jumpstart is a one-day workshop designed to help K-5 literacy coaches, curriculum coordinators, and school leaders acquire the skills they need for coaching success all year long. Workshops and presentations tackle the toughest challenges coaches face, including:
- Creating year-long professional development goals and plans with teachers
- Mentoring new teachers and setting up veteran-novice teacher partnerships
- Designing and stocking a literacy resource room for teachers
- Demonstrating model lessons and strategies in K-5 classrooms
- Leading teacher workshops and study groups in diverse settings
- Scheduling to maximize coaching time in classrooms and teacher growth
- Conferring techniques that are most effective in coaching sessions
- Integrating curriculum coaching into regularly scheduled staff meetings
- Designing a year-long study group, coaching and assessment plan
Participants receive a wealth of print resources (over 80 pages of planning templates, checklists, conferring tip sheets, advice from veteran coaches, sample daily, weekly and year-long calendars) and a DVD of classroom-based vignettes of teachers in action for use in workshops. Workshop leaders take participants step-by-step through the design, implementation, and evaluation of study groups and workshops using these video resources. The seminar will be led by: Jennifer Allen Literacy coach and reading specialist in Waterville, Maine and author of the best-selling Becoming a Literacy Leader: Supporting Learning and Change (Stenhouse, 2006).
Brenda Power Experienced workshop leader and author of many books on literacy instruction, including Living the Questions (Stenhouse Publishers), The Art of Classroom Inquiry (Heinemann), and The Back-to-School Book (Scholastic). This workshop has a limited enrollment, and is a shorter version of the popular two-day "Becoming a Literacy Coach" workshop offered by Choice Literacy. Please note that all summer sections of "Becoming a Literacy Coach" sold out weeks in advance. If you are interested in attending, we encourage you to submit your registration and payment as soon as possible.
The fee includes a continental breakfast and snack breaks. Attendees are responsible for all travel, housing, and additional meal costs.

A fabulous opportunity to learn and grow in a risk-free environment. I loved every moment, and I wish we had more time to learn together.
Heidi Ford, Literacy Coach Coordinator
This was a very practical, realistic overview and in-depth workshop for coaches. We had opportunities to reflect, learn, share, and plan in a safe, professional learning community. The quality of the presentations and the honesty of the presenters were superior.
Susan Fish, Literacy Coach
Amazing! I feel so much better about what my job description is, and where I should start. It was just the right amount of information. I so appreciate anything that is presented well, and that I can use immediately.

Daily 5/CAFÉ in the Classroom Combo: Helping Children Visualize and Attain Goals in Literacy Workshops
Featuring "The Sisters" Gail Boushey and Joan Moser
K-5 One-Day WorkshopWinter 2008 Location and Date:
Clearwater, Florida - Sunday, January 27th Sand Key Resort
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Fee: $295 (Includes DVD Workshop Kit CAFÉ in the Classroom, a $229 Value)
Program Description Teachers know assessing young readers involves more than determining a reading level and moving them onto the next. Yet all too often, assessment systems don't provide much information beyond determining a child's reading level. Gail Boushey and Joan Moser (authors of the book The Daily Five: Fostering Literacy Independence in the Elementary Grades) developed the CAFÉ assessment system to help elementary students understand and master different strategies used by successful readers.
CAFÉ is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. Gail and Joan developed the system based upon Richard Allington's research on the attributes of successful readers, Regie Routman's goal setting strategies in Reading Essentials, and other classroom-based schemes for linking assessment to daily workshop routines. Joan is a full-time teacher in a grades K-2 multiage classroom; Gail is a grades K-5 literacy coach. They both use the system daily with students, and have helped dozens of teachers in their school districts implement the program.
The heart of CAFÉ is a series of procedures within the reading workshop that enable even the youngest readers to self-monitor their progress, and chart their goals within the larger context of the classroom community.
The program shows how the CAFE system can be integrated with the Daily 5 program, and includes examples of goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs.
This interactive presentation will include a brief overview of the research that supports the CAFÉ assessment system. Participants will also be provided with the tools they need to get lead workshops on CAFÉ in their own schools, including recordkeeping forms, sample goals, and tips for organizing teacher notes.
Each participant will leave with a resource binder, CD of templates and workshop suggestions, and a DVD with over 80 minutes of individual, small-group, and whole-class examples of CAFÉ with students who have a range of needs and goals. Gail and Joan will share video clips of the program in action, so participants can see how individual children work with their teachers to set goals and post them, and then how the teacher uses the information from individual conferences to plan small-group and whole-class instruction.
Schools are paying a fortune for prepackaged programs and kits to help teachers assess the reading needs of their students. CAFÉ is not a packaged program or kit, and nothing needs to be purchased to put it in use - it is a simple series of research-based strategies that any teacher can use to help their students develop independence and monitor their own growth as readers.

Inspiring! The timing has me recharged for the new school year. It puts everything in perspective about assessment driving instruction.
Monica Simonson
Awesome - very user friendly and appropriate for the way education is moving today. The interactions when we had specific questions relating to our classrooms and the small size of the workshop was excellent.
Colette Sorensen
This was well-organized, with excellent presenters. I felt more like I was having a casual conversation with colleagues - it was highly energizing and the giveaways were such a nice touch.
