Program Description

The fourth grade slump is all too real in many schools, as eager young learners leave the primary grades behind, and struggle with the transition to the more sophisticated skills more complex writing texts require. Writers in Transition is a one-day workshop designed to help grades 3-6 literacy coaches, specialists, classroom teachers, curriculum coordinators, and school leaders acquire new skills for meeting the unique needs of writers in the intermediate grades.

Workshops and presentations will include:

  • Examples of classroom instruction for transitional writers;
  • Sample mini-lessons;
  • Strategies for grouping students for small-group instruction;
  • Advice on designing and stocking classroom libraries;
  • Tips on using nonfiction;
  • Meaningful writing strategies across the curriculum;
  • Formats that promote student independence;
  • Ways to foster thoughtful conversations with students;
  • Conferring techniques;
  • Assessment tools;
  • Student work samples;
  • Video from Franki Sibberson's classroom.

Participants receive a wealth of print resources (over 80 pages of planning templates, booklists, tip sheets, mini-lessons), a CD of workshop suggestions, and a DVD of classroom-based lessons and activities with intermediate learners designed for use in professional development settings. Participants will test out many of the activities during the workshop, and leave prepared to use the materials in their home districts and schools.

The seminar will be led by:

Franki Sibberson

Franki Sibberson has worked for nineteen years as an educator in many different roles - teaching children in a variety of elementary grades, assisting struggling readers in an intervention position, guiding literacy programs K - 12 in the central district office, and leading workshops for teachers at the state, regional, and national level.

For the past two years she has taken on a new role as a Curriculum Support Teacher in Dublin, Ohio, splitting her days between a grades 3/4 multiage classroom she shares with a colleague, and classroom visits and discussions with colleagues focused around literacy issues. Franki is the co-author with Karen Szymusiak of many books and videos on teaching reading in the intermediate grades, including Day to Day Assessment in the Reading Workshop, Beyond Leveled Books, Still Learning to Read, Bringing Reading to Life, and Making the Most of News Magazines.

This seminar has a strict limit of 55 attendees, to allow for continuous interaction and personalized coaching support from the seminar leaders. Each day will feature a balance of workshops and strategy sessions, as well as unstructured time to allow for personal reflection and individual consultations.

The fee includes a continental breakfast and snack breaks daily. Attendees are responsible for all travel, housing, and additional meal costs.
