Program Description
Are you teaching children who speak many languages? Are you trying to assist teachers who work with children of many different cultures in writing and reading workshops? Literacy from the Start: Writing and Reading Workshops for the Youngest English Language Learners is a two-day institute designed to help you understand the needs and strengths of pre-K through grade 2 learners.
Andie Cunningham and Ruth Shagoury will take you into Andie's classroom, where you will view video from reading and writing workshops with five-, six- and seven-year-olds. These children speak six different first languages, and have a tremendous variety of home experiences with literacy. Andie and Ruth will share practical strategies for fostering literacy across many different languages, assessing and tracking literacy growth, communicating with parents, and collaborating with colleagues. The interactive workshops will feature brief presentations, video excerpts, reading, and discussion. Participants will receive a binder with over 80 pages of print materials and a DVD Workshop Kit. You will leave with a rich array of print and video resources for leading professional development programs in your home school or district. Presentations and resources provided will tackle:
- Tipsheets for conferring with young English language learners;
- Strategies for designing reading units of study;
- Booklists of children's literature linked to different languages and cultures;
- Sessions on the "silent period" and how to communicate with students in it;
- Assessment tools for recording growth over time;
- Creative ideas for communicating with parents;
- Sample literacy workshop formats and schedules;
- Quick ways to build awareness of the different languages and cultures in the room;
- Video examples of writing and reading conferences, lessons, and assessment;
- Professional development workshop suggestions for using the materials at your home school or district.
Space is limited - enrollment will be capped at 55 participants to ensure a personalized, interactive experience for all.
Andie Cunningham and Ruth Shagoury are the co-authors of Starting with Comprehension: Reading Strategies for the Youngest Learners (Stenhouse, 2005). Andie was a kindergarten teacher for five years at Harold Oliver Primary School in Portland, Oregon, is a facilitator in the Courage to Teach program, and currently works as an instructor at Lewis and Clark College. Ruth has spent many years working with English language learners in pre-K through grade 12 classrooms, and has written over a dozen books. She holds the Mary Stuart Rogers endowed chair at Lewis and Clark College.
