The Choice Literacy K-6 Word Work Sampler brings together examples of teachers from across the country teaching word learning strategies from kindergarten through 6th grade classrooms. Rather than presenting a one-size-fits-all program, the DVD features teachers using many different instruction techniques for conferring, strategy groups, guided writing, and whole-class lessons based on student needs.
The 94 minute video includes examples of: - Word sorting activities in a 6th grade classroom;
- Individual conferences with young English language learners who are just starting to understand the links between letters, sounds, and words;
- Strategy groups in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms targeting high frequency sounds and words;
- Creative use of the walls for building word learning in the primary grades;
- Word work homework discussions with 5th graders;
- Teaching word choice as a revision strategy in a 4th grade classroom; and
- Using dictionaries as a tool to build connections between a principal and a 3rd grade class all year long.
The Word Work Sampler features excerpts from previously published Choice Literacy DVDs and the www.choiceliteracy.com website, as well as many new vignettes. Filmed over two years in 12 different classrooms from Maine to Oregon, these real-life teaching examples will inspire educators and provoke thoughtful discussions about the many possibilities for effective word study.
You can watch a brief preview of the start of the video below. (Please be aware that the quality of web video is significantly lower than that of the published DVD kit.)
