Getting the Most Out of New Picture Books
Most of the books I read aloud to my students are books that I know they will pick up and want to read on their own. I often feel like a book salesperson - finding, marketing and selling books I know will fit their reading needs. The Pigeon books are an easy sell because the author uses about 10 words or less on each page, focuses on repetition and high frequency words, and sprinkles humor throughout. Willems also incorporates various types of punctuation in his books (which is great for fluency practice). These characteristics allow younger readers to have success reading and rereading something other than a guided reading book independently. . . .
