About Choice Literacy

Hi. I'm Brenda Power, and I founded Choice Literacy in 2006. This site is the one I wished for when I was teaching and leading literacy initiatives in schools. Choice Literacy is a multimedia resource of articles, videos, and professional development guides for teachers who are literacy leaders.

The site launched with 60 print articles and 14 videos.  Six years, 1500 articles and 300 videos later, we are going and growing strong.  Many of our contributors are some of the biggest names in literacy education today. But to be honest, the contributors who excite us the most are the ones you may never have heard of before coming to Choice Literacy - we travel the country to find this up and coming talent, so you're the first to get glimpses of their teaching through their writing and classroom videos. Some wonderful books on reading and writing instruction started as essays at Choice Literacy.  Our goal is to be a quiet haven on the web for teachers who lead -- a place where you can grab a cup of coffee or tea and sit a spell, finding just what you need for renewal, reflection, or redirection. All in an ad-free environment, with no pitches for programs cluttering our pages. We pride ourselves on our independence from commercial publishers or sponsors.

Because we update our content weekly, our new offerings are timely.  If you've got a bad case of the Januaries this winter, chances are one of our contributors does too and chose to write about it. If you're confused about the difference between opinion and persuasive writing in the Common Core, it's likely one of our contributors is grappling with the same issue and writing about how their school is moving forward with writing instruction. One thing our contributors hear a lot is, "I felt like you were sitting there right beside me." There is enough that's difficult and hard in education right now. It's good sometimes to be reminded how much is going right.

We have thousands of paid subscribers to the site, and tens of thousands more who subscribe to our free weekly newsletter, The Big Fresh. Choice Literacy also offers DVDs and books for professional development, and a small number of live workshops throughout the country. You can read unsolicited testimonials about the website and our services at this link.

Who We Are

We have over 60 teachers and school leaders who have contributed to the site. You can scroll through our most frequent contributors at this link.  My background includes work as a teacher, college professor, and senior editor at Stenhouse Publishers. I met many of the Choice Literacy contributors when I visited their classrooms or edited their writing and video projects in previous decades. I live on a small lake in Maine with my husband Dave, and we have one daughter in college.

Franki Sibberson

Franki Sibberson is the Lead Contributor at Choice Literacy. We joke around here that almost every contributor is no more than "three degrees of separation from Franki." She is a tireless advocate for kids and innovative practice, and eagerly encourages anyone she meets in her travels who is doing remarkable work to write for Choice Literacy. Franki is the author of many books and videos on teaching reading in the intermediate grades. She also writes regularly on the blog she shares with Mary Lee Hahn, A Year of Reading.
